John is my uncle. He is a husband and father, and a former artist and carpenter. He is also an alcoholic.? I went to visit John at his home in Liverpool. He had offered to talk to me on camera about his alcohol use. In the 3 years since I’d last seen John, he’d gone from being an ostensibly healthy person, able to go out, walk around and function normally, to the housebound debilitated state you see in the film. Over that time he’d seen numerous family interventions, doctors, carers and extended hospital visits. None of which seemed to have a lasting impact on his drinking, which typically amounted to 2 bottles of whisky a day.? The idea for the film was just to let him talk, with a camera rolling, to see what a person addicted to alcohol had to say about being addicted to alcohol - a view to the mind of an alcohol addict, uninterrupted. No meddlesome presenter, no detracting voiceover, no sensationalist hyperbole overshadowing themessage of the film, just one man talking honestly and openly about his addiction. More from this interview can be seen in my feature documentary A Royal Hangover, which is available to stream with Amazon Prime, and to rent/buy with iTunes, Amazon on Demand, Google Play, Vimeo & direct from my distributor Journeyman Pictures. arthurcauty.com
